Rainwater Harvesting for a Water-Positive Campus

Location: Morarji Desai Government Residential Pre-University College and High School.
Year of implementation: 2024–25.
Funding: Lowe’s India Private Limited, under CSR.

Objectives

  • Reduce the pressure on ground water extraction and establish an alternative water source.
  • Recharge the underground aquifer through rainwater harvesting for sustainable ground water management.
  • Educate children and teaching staff on the importance of rainwater recharge and the present water crisis.

Activities

Harvesting of surface run-off — development of three injection wells to harvest surface run-off and recharge the running borewell and ground water.

Roof-top rainwater harvesting — harvesting from 5,000 square feet of existing building roof; construction of three new surface tanks of 10,000 litre capacity each; renovation of three existing tanks; renovation of two existing sumps and installation of a submersible pump for one sump.

Plantation — 150 horticulture, forestry and medicinal plants planted in the campus with the involvement of students.
