Fuel Sourcing and Consumption Pattern Study

(Sponsored by ITC Limited)

Project Overview

A comprehensive study analyzing fuel usage in tobacco-curing processes across Karnataka's agricultural regions.

Key Objectives:

  • Identify fuel types used in tobacco curing
  • Measure wood fuel consumption rates
  • Evaluate energy conservation practices
  • Map fuel sourcing patterns

Significant Findings:

  • Primary Fuel: Eucalyptus roots (used by 82% farmers)
  • Alternative Awareness: 68% farmers know about coffee husk/coconut shell options
  • Efficiency Gap: Energy-efficient barns reduce consumption by 25-30%
  • Environmental Concern: Only 15% farmers actively plant trees for future fuel needs

Impact:
This study helped ITC develop their Sustainable Tobacco Program, introducing:

  • Farmer training on agro-waste utilization
  • Subsidies for energy-efficient barns
  • Community tree-planting initiatives
